What Is Alcantara Leather?

There are literally hundreds of types of leather out there but not all of them are real or contain characteristics that come anywhere near genuine leather. As far as Alcantara is concerned, it is just another type of synthetic leather that has a texture like suede. The origin of this leather dates back to the 1970s when it was first manufactured. Some people don’t prefer animal hides that are used in the making of real leather products so as an alternative, the industry came up with the idea of Alcantara Leather. In simple words, it is a synthetic alternative to animal hide for those who love the feel and touch of leather but like to opt-in for a cheaper option.

However, this type of leather is rarely used in clothing and is most popular when it comes to accessories like car interior or furniture.

Is Alcantara Better Than Leather?

The question of whether Alcantara is better than leather or suede can only be answered by getting deep into the manufacturing process of Alcantara. Unlike real leather, Alcantara is a microfiber material that is manufactured using approximately 68% polyester and 32% polyurethane. It basically has nothing to do with animal hide, however, it is called leather because of its uncanny resemblance with real leather and suede. This is why Many high-end industries use this leather in their products, including clothing, jewelry, fashion and smartphone covers.

Other than these fashion accessories, this leather type is quite popular in the furnishings business as well as car interiors, including in Formula One. isn’t it great?

There is another similar product called Ultrasuede which is made globally using a similar technique. However, the original Alcantara is only manufactured by Alcantara company based in Italy.
